Jonathan Brier: Helfa Gelf







I managed to make it over to Wrexham to visit the studio of Jonathan Brier who has opened his studio as part of the Helfa Gelf Open Studio Arts Trail scheme. I'd seen his work online and started to stalk chat to him on twitter so I was looking forward to getting over to see his work in the flesh. 
Firstly Jonathan's a lovely bloke, the studio is really interesting, lots crammed into a tiny box room [seriously impressed by how much he'd fitted in] there's plenty to see - not only did I leave jealous of the work and talent on display but his collection of Spiderman and Hellboy figures certainly caught my eye aswell... The paintings are simply stunning, using traditional oil painting techniques to paint contemporary portraits, incorporating layers of text and over painting on-top of portraits, he's currently producing a series of studies of fruit, which will part of an exhibition entitled "Life Study" at Theatre Clwyd on October 15th.

Helfa Gelf: Giant Step



We had a very busy weekend in the studio for Helfa Gelf: Open Studios, on the Saturday we had a group visit us from next door [MOSTYN Gallery] as part of a conference that was taking there called 'Giant Step':
"this conference looks at the role of institutions within contemporary culture. We bring together artists, curators, creative practitioners and others to discuss and debate how institutions or individuals stimulate and encourage the cultural dynamics of a location or society, particularly in areas with a less prominent critical audience".
So the fact they had a group studio of local artists next door participating in an regional Open Studios event was perfect! It was also a great opportunity for us as artists to do some networking! Artist Rob Stephen was invited to blog about the conference, and he's written a very honest, entertaining and insightful blog documenting the presentations, speakers, tours and his own personal reactions to the issues raised, its well worth a read! He also wrote a rather lovely piece about the visit to c.a.s.c [my studio] on there - I've posted some images capped from the blog above...

Liverpool: Pre Biennial









I headed over to Liverpool last Thursday [which just so happened to be my birthday] for a meeting in Tate, and whilst there managed to see the 'Turner, Monet and Twombly' exhibition - surprisingly I loved Twombly's work which I wasn't expecting at all! The city was busy getting itself ready for the opening of the Biennial the following day so I managed to see a few interesting sights as I made my way down from Lime Street to Albert Docks, I'm eager to head back soon to sample the full delights of the Biennial

British Glass Biennale 2012


Last week I spent the day travelling to and from Stourbridge for the British Glass Biennale admittedly it wouldn't normally be my first choice of an exhibition to see as I'm not very clued up on glass, but I'm learning a-lot through my day-job in MOSTYN and I thankfully had my friend/colleague Sioned on hand to explain the various techniques and give background on the makers, so I left the Biennale enlightened on the world of contemporary glass and awestruck by some of the works and talent on display - I would actually love to have a go at working with glass - glass-blowing sounds like fun! Sabrina Cant's beautiful Bat for Lashes- esque piece in particular caught my eye...
